Hydroponics News
Congressman Adam Putnam visited Lighthouse
Ministries and its Hydroponics Garden this past
August. Putnam gave a speech from the garden sharing
with community members and officials his support of
new innovative farming techniques and growing more
food on less available land. Lighthouse’s
hydroponics garden allows the ministry to grow fresh
fruits and vegetables to serve to the homeless. The
garden requires only 20% of the space most gardens
require enabling the ministry to grow more food with
less room and cost.
With the help of the George W. Jenkins Fund within
the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland,
Lighthouse has recently expanded its garden to
include 7,000 plants. Also present at the event were
State Rep. Seth McKeel, Sheriff Grady Judd, Polk
County Property Appraiser Marsha Faux, Dr. Fred
Petitt, Entomologist for Epcot’s Land Pavilion
Program and many other community friends.
What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is growing plants without soil. With
traditional gardening, vegetables grow a large root
system to search for food and water. With hydroponics,
food and water are fed directly to the plants’ roots.
This process enables plants to spend more energy growing
above the surface at a rate two times faster than
traditional gardening. Hydroponic gardens require only
20% of the space your typical outdoor garden requires.
Two-fold benefit to those served by Lighthouse
Ministries
1.) Food Provisions:
By
using the hydroponic gardening method, a greater amount
of fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, green
beans, cucumbers, lettuce, peas, and broccoli can be
produced with less money, time and space.
2.) Work Therapy Opportunities:
Hydroponic Gardening will create more job internship
opportunities for Lighthouse residents. Interns will
learn to grow fruits and vegetables and gain experience
in business and agriculture.
